Consume Empty Water Bottle?

I tried to consume a Water Bottle because I was thirsty but evidently I just ate plastic because it didn't restore any thirst. Would be good to see if there's liquid in the bottle before trying to consume it. Or maybe "this is empty" when you mouse over it.
